Spinning Composter - A spinning composter is a type of compost bin that makes mixing your organic waste much easier. In fact, some people feel like a spinning composter, also known as a compost tumbler, is the most effective way to ensure that your garden compost is perfectly turned for optimum results.
Now, personally I think this is a matter of preference. Some gardeners enjoy the physical process of turning their compost manually using a turning fork or a compost aerator. Not only are they making sure that their organic mulch is turned to their satisfaction, but they are getting a great workout as well! But, hand turning your compost can be difficult for some gardeners and it is time consuming. So that is where a spinning composter is a perfect option.
What is a Spinning Composter?
A spinning composter, or compost tumbler, is usually a large bin with an opening in the side where you add your organic waste. The bin is fixed on an axis of some sort so you can tumble or spin the mixture easily.
There are several different styles of compost tumblers. Some are fixed on a horizontal axis and they spin much like rotating a bingo cage or a rotisserie. Others are made on a vertical axis and look like a large capsule. Both types are effective ways to mix your organic material, but they each will fit differently in your composting space.
A horizontal spinning composter is usually compact enough to tuck into the corner of a patio or by your back door making it easy to add kitchen scraps as you collect them. Many vertical compost tumblers take a bit more room, but they are perfectly suited for a corner of your yard or in the garden area.
Now these are general guidelines and you may find a vertical composter that fits perfectly on the patio, it is all a matter of personal preference.
How to Use a Spinning Composter
Making healthy garden compost with a spinning composter is a very simple process. You just add your kitchen waste, grass clipping, leaves and other organic waste to the bin through the access door. Give your composter a spin every few days and in no time you will have rich organic material to mix into your garden soil.
Many spinning composters have a handle that you use to turn the bin, while others you simply grab the tumbling unit and spin. Either way, mixing your compost is a piece of cake with a spinning composter. In fact, you will find that the entire composting process is so simple that you will wonder why you haven't be composting for years!
