How to Make Potting Soil
Mixing your own potting soil isn't an exact science, it is more a of a feel. Buy a small bag of potting soil and look at the texture, color, etc., then mix your own and try to achieve the same look and feel. Add garden soil and/or other organic additives such as compost, peat moss, and even sand to get the perfect mix.
Here is a video that will show you how to mix the perfect potting soil for your containers.
Making Potting Soil
As you can see from the video, making your own potting soil is a simple process. You can easily mix up enough for all your planters at once. If you are mixing a large batch of potting soil, use a wheelbarrow or a large plastic container for easy mixing.
The video mentions using garden loam or compost. Garden loam is a healthy type of garden soil that you can compress into a shape in your hand, but it crumbles nicely when you drop it. Clay soil holds it shape much like clay that children play with and sandy soil will not hold shape. Garden loam is the perfect blend of the two. If you don't have loamy garden soil, then you will want to use compost instead.
Another thing you will want to add to your potting soil mixture is a good slow release fertilizer. Most slow release fertilizers will feed your plants for about three to four months. You simply mix it in the soil before you plant and it will effectively feed your plants all season long.
Making your own potting mix is easy and economical. You will be able to grown more containers when you don't have to buy commercial potting soil anymore!
